The short version is this: In 2019 I had a breakdown, quit music, battled depression and financial difficulty. Then COVID hit and everything broke down for everyone. Then in early 2021 my partner Brittany was diagnosed with multiple cancers and began extensive chemo followed by surgeries. Then in July the basement unit in the house we were renting in Toronto caught fire. 6 weeks later we relocated to Cobourg, ON for a fresh start, where Britt could focus on recovery and where our son would start kindergarten. This song is a paean to the healing powers of new beginnings and the strength of family.

Lyrics

Well, the fever it broke like a bone
And I figured that I was alone
But there you stood, my sentinel son

And you asked me if I was ok
If the demons had all flown away
You could not have known just where I had gone

CHORUS:
But oh, little one
There is no more work to be done
Everything is laughter and sunlight
And we can just be kind

There’s a lighthouse a mile from here
You can stand at the edge of the pier
And look across to where ships ran aground

But that was a long time, you know
Now tourists take pictures and go
And they won’t see the beauty we’ve found

Hear my voice, take my hand and rejoice
We will go walking in the sand…

And now in the soft light of dawn
I can feel the whole world turning on
And it seems my heart is still beating along
