I’ve never been one for New Year’s resolutions but I imagine we all experience some years that on the whole are best forgotten as quickly as possible, though I will confess that every New Year’s Eve I experience some nostalgia mixed in with feelings of hope for the future. This song was an attempt to capture the jumble of emotions that often mark the end of something and the start of something else. I deliberately wrote it in waltz time to give it a stately, sort-of holiday feel.

Lyrics

It’s New Year’s Eve and I have a confession
And though I believe I’ve got something to say
It’s easy to feel like you’re spinning your wheels
Or even worse: that your words get in the way

Socially spent though I crave attention
I’m a little bit wasted and the kid is asleep
That big red ball is ready to fall
While strangers are necking in the street

CHORUS:
Tell your heart
Tell your heart
Tell your heart not to slow
I think it needs to know

The midnight moon like a box of golden
Shadows have shifted and the exit is clear
With New Year’s Day only minutes away
May the last one completely disappear

Old acquaintance: forget me not
Though I can’t seem to find my reflection…
