A classic, throwback sound (for me): 2 acoustics guitars, a bass and a cello. Classic double thumb finger style folk guitar pattern. Classic song structure (verse, verse, bridge verse) with a tag line chorus at the end of each verse. I wanted a song that showed something familiar, something optimistic, something nostalgic, something personal and something elegantly and deceptively simple with a bridge section that provided the lyrical gut punch.

Lyrics

Damn these careless rhymes
Such a waste of time
Fortune fades, baby so have I
Every day’s just a day gone by
And what we’ve made maybe won’t survive
But the light still shines on the main

Here’s my rule of thumb
It may be daft or dumb
Say goodbye only once or twice
Leave no trace of your sacrifice
“Come what may”: That’s my best advice
And the light still shines on the main

Many times I look for you now
In a crowd, but that’s a good place to hide
All those people who never allow us
To collide…

He’s the real surprise
There’s music in his eyes
One old microphone to inspire
Shouting like there’s a house on fire
But you know I’m just preaching to the choir
And the light still shines on the main
